Why ESG matters for every insurer

With the Omnibus I package (Directive (EU) 2026/470, in force since 19 March 2026), the EU significantly narrowed the range of companies required to report under the CSRD: the threshold was raised to more than 1,000 employees and more than EUR 50 million in turnover, and the revised thresholds apply from the financial year starting on 1 January 2027. As a result, most Ukrainian insurers will not be directly subject to CSRD reporting. Yet ESG still reaches insurers — through three channels:

Reinsurers and investors

Reinsurers request data on emissions, climate risks and ESG policy to assess and reinsure risks. Investors, shareholders and lenders expect ESG disclosure.

Value chain

Counterparties that are themselves subject to the CSRD and report across their value chain request data from their partners — including insurers.

Climate risks in Solvency II

Climate factors are taken into account in the requirements for an insurer’s risk management and solvency.

Module programme

As the topic is new for most companies, the module follows a “from basics to practice” approach: the first day builds a shared understanding of the subject, the following days go deeper into specific components, and the final day concludes with an implementation roadmap. Each training day ends with a Q&A session.

The training is delivered by IPC – Internationale Projekt Consult GmbH. Webinar start times will be announced separately.

Day 1

ESG regulatory landscape and channels of impact on the insurer

The concept of ESG and the European Green Deal, the purpose of the main instruments — CSRD, ESRS, the EU Taxonomy, SFDR and CSDDD — and the change in the scope of obliged entities after the Omnibus I package. The focus is on an insurer that is not directly subject to CSRD reporting but is affected by ESG through reinsurers’ requirements, the expectations of investors and lenders, counterparty requests and the inclusion of climate factors in prudential requirements.

Day 2

Double materiality and the structure of ESRS

How a company simultaneously assesses its own impact on the environment and society and the impact of sustainability matters on its finances and risks. The logic of ESRS — cross-cutting standards and topical blocks, how material topics are determined, the simplifications proposed by EFRAG at the end of 2025, and reporting across the value chain.

Day 3

Climate risks and their assessment

Physical risks (floods, storms and other events that damage insured property and increase claims) and transition risks (the consequences of the shift to a low-carbon economy). Climate scenario analysis methodology, integrating climate risks into the own risk assessment and capital needs, and catastrophe loss modelling as an underwriting tool.

24

November
Tuesday

Day 4

“Green” products and ESG in underwriting and investment

Practical integration of ESG into risk acceptance decisions and investment portfolio management. Criteria for a product’s alignment with the EU Taxonomy, the risk of “greenwashing” and the supervisory response to it, and the social and governance components of ESG with examples.

Day 5

Non-financial reporting, governance and the roadmap

Preparing a sustainability report and limited assurance, the role of the management body in ESG matters, and building ESG data collection and quality — even without a direct reporting obligation. The module concludes with an implementation roadmap for a Ukrainian insurer: from the minimum necessary steps to full readiness.

The order of topics and the distribution of material between days are indicative and may be adjusted during the training. The overall content and scope of the module remain unchanged.
